Bird Banding with Birds of Urban Baltimore / Baltimore Bird Club
Urban bird banding stations are rare, making this a unique opportunity to study bird behavior, distribution, and physiology in urban habitats. Evidence suggests that birds migrate differently through urban areas, and these habitats are important to the feeding and nesting of common species. We hope that this bird banding operation can provide useful information on how birds move through Baltimore City and live at Masonville Cove!
Education Center
Education Center
The Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center is a state-of-the-art green building featuring interactive and child friendly exhibits, animal ambassadors, historic artifacts from the Cove’s restoration, two student laboratories, restrooms, drinking water, and a large outdoor deck. Parking is located directly in front of the building and past the Engineering Trailer in the overflow lot. The building has an elevator and ramp access to help visitors reach the deck and outdoor areas of the campus.
Vernal Pool
Vernal pools are seasonal wetlands that fill during wetter months and are dry later in the year, creating a fish free breeding habitat for frogs, salamanders, and other wildlife. These habitats are easily overlooked and Masonville Cove is grateful to Jack Cover, a lifelong naturalist and National Aquarium curator, who spent decades advocating for these habitats and was a fixture for many years at our annual BioBlitz and Urban Wildlife Conservation Day events. You can learn more about these habitats in the Jack Cover Vernal Pools Act of 2026.
Fishing Piers
The fishing piers offer a welcome space to enjoy river views, observe wildlife, or fish using personal equipment or rods available to borrow from the Education Center. Visitors can reach the pier along the campus’s trail network and the pier features an accessible wooden pier designed to accommodate different mobility needs along with an additional floating pier.
Captain Trash Wheel
Captain Trash Wheel is a 40-foot long, trash munching machine charged with the mission of keeping the water of the Patapsco River safe and healthy for humans and wildlife. Captain is also active on social media where they are committed to empowering Marylanders to take action to protect the wildlife, water, and lands in their own communities.
Nature-Based Playground
Masonville’s nature-based playground was planned, designed, and installed through the Masonville Cove Links WildSTEM Internship Program. Created as a space for children to experience nature in a different way. Here, young people can balance, stretch, jump, climb, observe, explore, and even find a quiet place to simply sit and enjoy nature.
